The other moms in the park will be so envious!

Look at this wee blankie! This was made by the elementary children at Elaine's school, with a bit of help from parents and teachers, for the principal's upcoming baby.

I thought at first it would be too wussie, too pale and wan (10 points if you recognize "pale and wan") but now I think it is gorgeous, warts and all.

We found a crocheter.

One kid got a bit over-excited and had to be reined in.

One kid was a bit late, but that worked out well.

But the really super-cool thing is that they were all willing to part with their masterpieces to make this project together.

The parents, when asked, said, "Oh, but I don't knit," but the kids just learned to knit and did their best. (Note to self: teach beginners how to catch dropped stitches; that they should count every once in a while; and that sometimes it's a good idea just to rip and redo!)

The kids presented it to her yesterday at the graduation event. If I had spoken, I would have gushed a lot more, but it was right at the end and everyone was a bit antsy!

Ta da!

From the sublime to the ridiculous

One blanket down, and on to the next.

I told you a while ago that I am organising a blanket with Elaine's classmates. The kids, and a few parents and teachers, are making squares for a blanket for the principal's baby, expected this summer. We will give it to her sometime in the last week of school, so we now have about a month to get things all together.

I figure if we have 36 6-inch squares, that'll be a fine covering for any wee child. We now have 19. Not far to go, and if we only get 25 or 30, we'll be fine.

I added those brightly coloured tidbits to some of the "squares" to make them actually square. (Thank goodness for nona, wherever she now is.) The green flowers, or snowflakes, or whatever, on the far left, are actually holding dropped stitches from unravelling all the way down.

This will be a sentimental favourite, I am sure. Honestly, a bunch of kids making a blanket for their prinicipal!? She will love it.

It just makes me nervous having all those wiggly edges and enormously varying gauges and funny cast-off knots.

Relaaaaaax.

Squares, happy and sad

The squares in the last post are going to be part of a baby blanket. The children at Elaine's school will contribute some, too -- as well as a teacher or two, and I hope some parents! Since it was my bright idea, I will have the job of sewing it together before the end of the school year and making something wonderful out of it. We shall see!

I will also be sewing squares together in a week or so. You may have heard that Kay's husband passed away last weekend. I've met her and like her, and her kids are about the same ages as my kids, and I just can't imagine what she's dealing with. If I lived down the street, I would take her a banana bread or something, but since we are far away, we knit.

The Fans of Afghans for Afghans on Ravelry suggested making a blanket (or 6, now, I think!) in Kay and Peter's honour, and I am sewing up the Canadian effort. So far, one square: mine.

The finished blanket has to be in San Francisco by mid-May, so I expect to start getting packages in the mail any day. I'll show you the finished project before I send it off.

Square Mary strikes again

Oooh, a square! I love me a nice square.

Garter stitch with some eyelets, a nice heart, multicoloured random bobbles (not really random, since I followed a pattern...) and a good old basketweave.

I should have taken this picture outside this past weekend. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the weeds were getting yanked. Now, it's all grey and the remaining weeds are enjoying a nice rainy drink to encourage growth. And the flash is giving us over-bright colours.

Next up: Maybe a dishcloth!
